3 Vehicle Crash on I-81 in Virginia Kills Two College Students

A three vehicle wreck on I-81 in Wythe County, Virginia killed a Radford University and a Virginia Tech student, and five other people went to the hospital with various injuries.

The deadly crash happened on the evening of March 31. A Honda Insight being driven by the Virginia Tech student was going south on I-81 near Fort Chiswell, Virginia. Her vehicle crossed the median and slammed into a Honda Civic going north at approximately 10 pm.

The force of the crash made the Insight spin around in the northbound lanes and it was then hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Virginia Tech student was from the Virginia Beach area and died at the scene. She was ejected from her vehicle.

The driver of the Civic suffered serious injuries, and her passenger was killed at the crash scene, who was a Radford University student.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck was a 46 year old male from Georgia. He and his three passengers were treated for minor injuries.

Our View

Our Virginia car accident attorneys are truly saddened at the loss of life in this terrible head on car crash in Wythe County. We do not know for sure what caused the Honda Insight driver to cross over into the northbound lanes. But we can say it is possible that she either fell asleep or was distracted by something other than the road in front of her.

The website drowsydriving.org by the National Sleep Foundation states that 1550 people are killed in crashes due to driver fatigue every year. The problem with fatigued driving is that there is no test to determine how sleepy one is, and when you should not be driving. The US also does not do an effective job at reported drowing driving accidents.

We do know that young adults from 18-29 are more likely to drive drowsy than other drivers.

Whether drowsy driving or distracted driving caused this terrible accident, we want to remind all drivers to please stay focused on driving. Be well rested and never be distracted while driving.

A preventable crash such as this is terrible because it leaves people dead and/or seriously injured. There can also be personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death lawsuits. A wrongful death lawsuit can be appropriate in this type of case; it could be that the deceased Honda Insight driver was negligent, and her actions led to the death of another party. It is possible that a wrongful death lawsuit in this case could lead to a large financial settlement.

Really heart breaking to see youngsters succumbing to the injuries. Most of the youngsters tend to take things for granted and do not observe much caution while driving, resting after driving a while is last on their list. I strongly feel that a nation wide campaign must be carried out to make people aware of the dangers of the drowsy driving.
