How Dangerous Are Stop Sign Intersections?

Comments Off

stop sign accidentsA multi-vehicle accident in Newport News killed one victim and left nine other people injured. The crash occurred Saturday afternoon, at approximately 3:00, at the intersection of Harpersville Road and Louise Drive.

Police say a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling west on Harpersville Road when a 1998 Ford Expedition ran a stop sign at Louise Drive. The Expedition slammed into the Equinox. The impact sent the Equinox smashing into a tree and caused the Expedition to spin and flip over on its roof. There were eight people in the Expedition, including four children. The driver was an 18-year-old male. Another passenger, a 20-year-old man from the Bronx, N.Y., died at the scene of the crash. There were two adults in the Equinox at the time of the crash. Nine people were transferred to area hospitals; however, police have not released any information regarding the extent of injuries or conditions of the victims.

Police are still conducting an accident investigation and have not said if there will be any criminal charges filed.

National statistics reveal that one-third of all intersection crashes in the United States occur at stop sign controlled intersections – approximately 700,000 crashes. And more than 40 percent of fatal crashes that take place each year happen at stop sign intersections.

Common reasons why people run stop signs include:

  • Inattention;
  • Impatience;
  • Failure to come to a complete stop, referred to as a rolling stop;
  • Obstructed view;
  • Distracted driving;
  • Speeding;
  • Reckless driving; and
  • Driving under the influence.
