Fiery crash in Yorktown leaves two hurt

Comments Off

Two people were hurt early Monday morning when their car struck a tree and burst into flames near 904 Dare Road in Yorktown.

The two – the driver and a passenger – are being treated at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Their 1998 Ford Mustang was headed east on Dare Road at about 5 a.m. Monday when the driver lost control of the car, went off the road and "wrapped around a tree," the Daily Press reported Virginia State Police as saying.

Confusion at the scene initially led police to report that a third person had died at the scene and was burned beyond recognition. However, WAVY-TV reported, the remains of the third person turned out to be a pile of clothes mixed with a strawberry protein shake.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the accident. However, many traffic accidents in the early-morning hours can be blamed, in part, on drowsy driving. About 100,000 reportable accidents annually are caused by driver fatigue. These crashes cause 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses, according to the National Sleep Foundation’s drowsydriving.org Web site.
