Gloucester County crash claims life

Comments Off

A traffic accident Tuesday evening on U.S. Highway 17 in the Gloucester County city of Middlesex claimed the life of a woman and left a 2-year-old hurt.

Susan Joyce Wright, 38, was the driver of the 2008 Kia in the crash, The Virginian-Pilot reported. The toddler was in a child seat, and Wright was wearing a seat belt, the Virginia State Police told the newspaper.

The crash happened when the Kia went off the right side of the road and overturned after striking several street signs. Both people were flown to area hospitals, but Wright died after arrival. A name and for the toddler – in stable condition Wednesday morning, according to WAVY-TV – was not available.

Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police told WAVY-TV that the woman and the child were not related.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

Use of child safety seats are an important step toward keeping children safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that auto crashes are the chief cause of death among children age 2 to 14. The agency suggests that infants ride in rear-facing child safety seats, toddlers ride in forward-facing seats, children age 4-7 ride in booster seats and children age 8 and up use regular seat belts.
