National “Stop on Red” Week Highlights Need for Improved Traffic Safety

Comments Off

Running red lights is a major traffic issue and a contributor to 900 deaths and 150,000 injuries. In order to bring awareness to this issue, there’s the National “Stop on Red” week which is from August 2 to August 8. Police officers are making a concerted effort to enforce red light running traffic violations, including the Virginia Beach, Virginia (VA) area.

As an injury lawyer who works for a firm that represents clients hurt in car accidents, I possess a strong passion for road safety and following basic traffic guidelines, including obeying traffic lights.

The “Stop on Red” campaign also advocates red light cameras and the statistics indicate this technology helps in reducing red light running car accidents. In Fairfax, Virginia (VA) there was a 44 percent reduction in car crashes connected to running a red light after cameras were installed.

Here’s a video discussing the National “Stop on Red” Week…

Ideally, we should strive to simply follow the rules of the road and not run red lights. However, since 73 citations were issued to drivers in Virginia Beach on August 6, its clear mechanisms like red light cameras are necessary.
