FDA Issues Safety Alert about Compounding Pharmacy

Comments Off

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert that warned physicians and pharmacists to avoid drugs produced by a compounding pharmacy called “The Compounding Shop” based in Florida, according to the Associated Press.

A recent inspection of the compounding pharmacy reportedly raised concerns about sterility problems that may lead to bacterial contamination. The Compounding Shop has agreed to recall all of its sterile drugs and is now notifying customers about this public health concern. The FDA also declared that healthcare providers should quarantine drugs from The Compounding Shop and not give them to patients. If an injectable drug product is contaminated, it could result in a life-threatening infection in patients.

It’s disturbing to read about another compounding pharmacy that is facing scrutiny for not keeping their facilities clean. It wasn’t that long ago where The New England Compounding Center produced contaminated drugs and was linked to a major meningitis outbreak in 2012. This meningitis outbreak led to multiple lives lost and at least 39 illnesses, according to the Washington Post.

Here is a video report about the serious risk of contamination in many compounding pharmacies:

If you or a loved one suffered an infection or other physical ailment and suspect it was due to a contaminated drug, take a moment to read our firm’s blog about the recent meningitis outbreak (which features a video about contaminated drugs from the Center for Disease Control). Our law firm also published an article about three Virginia residents who suffered meningitis due to steroid shots.
