Two Vacant Virginia Supreme Court Seats Filled

Comments Off

According to the Daily Press, the Virginia State Supreme Court, which has been has been short-staffed since the retirement of Justice Lawrence Koontz Jr. and the death of Justice Leroy R. Hassell Sr., is now back to its full panel of seven justices. The Republican-controlled Virginia House of Delegates and Dmocrat-controlled Senate had been unable to agree on suitable new judges for many months but finally approved Elizabeth McClanahan and Cleo Powell to fill the vacanies on July 29, 2011.

The deadlock was only broken after Gov. Bob McDonnell sent a terse letter to both chambers of the state legislature. McClanahan is a Republican favorite, and Democrat-backed Powell will become the first black woman to sit on the highest court of appeals in Virginia.
