Tragic Car Accident on Interstate 264 Highlights Terror of Wrong Way Drivers

Comments Off

A car was traveling on the Interstate (I-64) HOV lane when it exited onto the wrong lane on Interstate 264 (I-264) West. As a result, the car slammed head-on into a vehicle causing a massive fire and the death of Frances Wilson from the wreck.

My deepest condolences go out to Mrs. Wilson’s friends and family. Any loss of life from a car accident is tragic, but it’s even worse during the holidays.

The interchange on I-64 and I-264 in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Chesapeake area is certainly a mess, but does not excuse the wrongdoer’s negligent driving. The costs to everyone for a bad decision on the highway are so high as shown by the loss of Mrs. Wilson. Wrong way driving is a frightening event on the highway which often results in someone being killed or seriously injured.

Sadly, there have been multiple instances of drivers who exited the wrong way on I-264 and wound up causing fatal car wrecks. In May 2007 and February 2006, a total of six people were killed due to the exact same error.

There isn’t any current empirical data on the number of wrong way driver accidents in Virginia, but this appears to be an issue in the Hampton Roads region.
