Does the profession you have increase your risk of being in a car crash? It might, according to one study. The statistics of this study are considered so valid, that many insurance companies use them to determine how much a person’s auto insurance rates should be. What may be surprising for many people is that the more education a profession requires, the higher risk it appears to have for crashes.
In order from highest risk to lowest, the top 10 professions are:
- Doctors: Out of every 1,000 doctors, 109 will be in car crashes each year. There will also be 44 speeding violations issued to that group;
- Lawyers: Out of every 1,000 lawyers, 106 will be in crashes and 37 will receive speeding tickets;
- Architects: Out of every 1,000 architects, 105 will be in crashes and 72 will receive speeding tickets;
- Real estate brokers: Out of every 1,000 architects, 102 will be in crashes and 39 will receive speeding tickets;
- Enlisted military: Out of every 1,000 architects, 99 will be in crashes and 78 will receive speeding tickets;
- Social workers: Out of every 1,000 architects, 98 will be in crashes and 77 will receive speeding tickets;
- Manual laborer: Out of every 1,000 architects, 96 will be in crashes and 77 will receive speeding tickets;
- Analysts: Out of every 1,000 architects, 95 will be in crashes and 40 will receive speeding tickets;
- Engineers: Out of every 1,000 architects, 94 will be in crashes and 51 will receive speeding tickets; and
- Consultants: Out of every 1,000 architects, 94 will be in crashes and 50 will receive speeding tickets.
The study did point find that certain factors can contribute to a higher risk, such as jobs that require more time on the road. Another factor that strongly stood out was that high-demand professions could affect the hours of sleep a person gets, increasing the risk of fatigued driving. For example, when you look at the number one high-risk professions – doctors – one could wonder if sleep-deprived residents and interns cause that profession to be at number one.
