Beacon Shores Nursing Home, located at 340 Lynn Shores Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia (VA) is set to lose its Medicare funding in May. The facility failed to improve its level of treatment and continue to have a poor record when it comes to nursing home neglect and abuse.
Beacon Shores was first cited back in 2008 when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) categorized the nursing home as a “special focus facility" meaning it had persistent problems and failed to correct them in a timely manner.
These problems, listed as “deficiencies” in CMS reports included:
- A failure to make sure residents received proper nourishment
- Abuse and excessive punishment
- Care by nurse/staff who have records of abuse and neglect
The nursing home was also cited for not informing family and doctors when an injury or a change in health status of their loved one had occurred, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
I wrote about the nursing home abuse problems at Beacon Shores last year and the fact that these problems have continued is very disturbing.
The most recent report said Beacon Shores had 28 deficiencies. That may not sound like a lot on the surface, but keep in mind that the average number of deficiencies in VA nursing homes is nine. That means Beacon Shores had more than triple the number of deficiencies as their VA competitors.
Losing Medicare funding could prove to be a crushing blow to a nursing home facility, but if that facility can’t properly care for the elderly, it’s not a major loss to the Va. Beach community.
