A woman will spend at least the next 14 years in prison on second degree murder and DWI charges.

Beaufort County prosecutors say Karrie Respess of Belhaven had a blood alcohol level of .17 and they estimate she was speeding at over 100 miles per hour when her car crashed in Sidney Road in January 2008. Authorities say the woman was under the influence of cocaine and opiates.

Killed in the accident was David Fritzler, a passenger in the woman’s car.

Prosecutors say they decided to charge the woman with second degree murder because of her high blood alcohol level, the use of controlled substances, coupled with prior convictions of fleeing police and driving while her license was revoked.
