According to Sheriff Tilley, the pilot  was practicing flying a single-engine thrust crop-duster plane when  the plane went down in a cornfield near the 800 block of Swamp Road  shortly before 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Although there were no eyewitnesses,  a local crop duster said he saw smoke and thought that a plane had crashed, according to Tilley. By the time responders  got to the wreckage it was too late. Wilson was declared dead at the  scene by Perquimans Emergency Medical Service workers.

The body of the pilot was transported  to Albemarle Hospital and his family has been notified. Sheriff Tilley  said the National Transportation Safety Board was notified of the accident  at 8:30 p.m., which in turn notified the Federal Aviation Administration.  Inspectors with the FAA will come to the scene of the wreck on Monday  to help determine the true cause of the plane crash.
