Under closer investigation Southern Industrial Constructors has been sued by two workers injured in a deadly explosion at a Slim Jim plant in North Carolina. The company insists it does not believe they were involved in the explosion.
Representatives for Southern Industrial Constructors released a statement on Tuesday stating that employees with Raleigh-based Southern Industrial Constructors did not work within or above the pump room. Federal investigators have said they think the June 9 explosion at the ConAgra Foods plant was fueled by a natural gas leak and that they had traced the blast to a pump room.
The lawsuits were filed by Leonard Spruill of Selma and Tammie O’Neal of Zebulon against Southern Industrial on Monday, citing that the company was responsible for the natural gas leak.
Dozens were injured and three people died in the explosion. Members of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and inspectors with the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health are reviewing employee training records and examining equipment to determine the cause of the gas leak and how that sparked the explosion.
