It appears that drunk driving took yet another young life in North Carolina. On the evening of Aug. 31, a 2006 Subaru Forester was traveling in Hickory, NC when it hit a curb and flipped several times. It came to rest in a field next to the road.

The police stated that the passenger in the car, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital but died due to the severity of his injuries. He had been thrown from the car. The driver of the Subaru was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries. He was treated and released.

The police suspect that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. The driver has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, possession of an open container, driving after consuming by provisional licensee and careless and reckless driving.

He has been released on a $10,000 bond.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the passenger’s family. This tragic accident probably could have been prevented. If only the driver had exercised more caution and simply called a cab, or called his parents, maybe this terrible incident would have never happened.

We hope this heartbreaking event serves as a reminder to never drink and drive.
