As a North Carolina car accident attorney, I know all too well how dangerous crashes can become when safety equipment like seat belts go unused. But what happens when another key piece of protective equipment, the airbag, deploys but malfunctions?
A man in Texas (TX) alerted federal authorities about a potential defect in 2012 Hyundai Elantras after having an accident in which, he claims, alf of his ear was cut off by a metal bracket that released along with the car's airbag. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is investigating the report, telling Forbes that it received a photograph showing a metal component protruding from the headliner above the driver's seat in the wrecked vehicle.
Safety features should protect drivers, not further endanger them. This man is lucky to have not been more severely injured. At a time where an airbag was needed most, it not only failed to properly perform, it actually injured the driver further. This is unacceptable. As the investigation continues, we'll see how and why the air bag malfunctioned.
