The autopsies of the three workers killed in the ConAgra plant explosion in Garner, North Carolina (NC) have revealed they died when the roof of the ConAgra plant collapsed on top of them.
On June 9th; an explosion occurred in the ConAgra plant that lead to parts of the roof collapsing, several small fires and an ammonia leak. Close to 300 workers from Garner, North Carolina (NC) were in the plant at the time of the explosion. Thirty eight workers were treated for burns in Wake County hospitals, three were missing, and three firemen were later treated for exposure to ammonia.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency immediately began monitoring air quality in the surrounding Garner area and inspectors arrived to the scene shortly after to try and determine the cause of the blast. It took several hours to contain the fires at the ConAgra plant. Afterwards, agents at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were able to determine that the air quality in Garner had not been endangered; and inspectors determined the blast resulted from a vented gas line.
It was a grim scene in Garner while the Wake County search and rescue team tried to locate the missing bodies. The scene quickly turned to devastation the next day when the bodies of Barbara McLean, Lewis Watson and Rachel Pulley where found dead. Now, nearly two months after the explosion at the ConAgra plant, coworkers and residents of Garner, North Carolina (NC) are still in shock over their loss. With dozens of people still healing from their injuries, and the plant still shut down, times have been hard for the workers and city alike.
