A ten-year-old boy was struck by a police car while crossing a road in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC).

The boy, Hasaun Raheem Andrews, was attempting to cross South Tryon Street on foot when he was struck by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police cruiser driven by Officer Dondi Pogue. At the time of the accident Hasaun Raheem Andrews was following his brother across the four lane road. His brother was not hurt in the accident, but Andrews was taken to the Carolinas Medical Center where he was treated for a broken leg.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has opened an investigation on the accident to determine why Officer Dondi Pogue initially struck the child. So far no charges have been filed; however, investigators are looking in to possible factors such as speed, road conditions, and visibility.

Luckily, the young boy only sustained non-life threatening injuries but he will have to endure a lengthy recovery process once he leaves the Carolinas Medical Center.

Unfortunately, this is not the first pedestrian accident to occur on South Tryon Street. Earlier this year my colleague, Emily Mapp Brannon, wrote an article about another pedestrian who was struck and killed by a car while attempting to cross the street on foot in Mecklenburg, North Carolina (NC). The four lane street is a difficult for pedestrians to cross, even at intersections.

Pedestrians have to take extra precautions on large roadways with a higher speed limit like South Tryon Street. If you are attempting to cross a roadway on foot always try to use designated pedestrian crossings. If you have children, teach them to only cross at lighted crosswalks. Children can be difficult for drivers to see, which gives them a bigger risk when crossing, even at an intersection.
