North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened Wednesday afternoon in Edgecombe County. Troopers say the driver was trapped in the SUV which caught fire in the crash on Highway 42 near Macclesfield, North Carolina (N.C.).

The deadly SUV accident happened near an intersection with St. Lewis Road around 3:00 p.m. According to the Highway Patrol the SUV involved was heading east on Highway 42 when it ran off the road into a ditch. The vehicle flipped 2 to 3 times before coming to a standstill. There was only the driver in the vehicle.

The manufacturers of SUV’s are under increased scrutiny for not improving the safety of these popular vehicles. Sport Utility Vehicle rollover accidents only accounted for 3% of all U.S. auto accidents in 2005, but caused nearly a third of all vehicle-occupant fatalities, and an SUV occupant is more than three times as likely to die as a result of a rollover as an occupant of a passenger car.
