A Fayetteville, North Carolina (NC) police officer hit and killed a pedestrian this weekend.
The pedestrian was walking on Grove towards Eastern Boulevard in Fayetteville, North Carolina (NC) when he stepped in front of the Fayetteville Police Department cruiser. The police officer stopped the vehicle and called for emergency medical services, but the pedestrian could not be revived and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The pedestrian did not have identification at the time of the accident and their name has been withheld until the family can be notified.
The police officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of investigations being held on the accident. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is conducting an internal administrative investigation. The North Carolina Highway Patrol and Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit are also conducting their own investigations.
Tragically, pedestrian accidents occur often. Crossing in front of a moving vehicle is often the cause of these accidents. If you are walking along a roadway, be sure to pay extra attention anytime you have to cross the road, even at well marked intersections. Remember that the vehicle may make a right turn on red, or may run the stop light or stop sign entirely. It is safest to wait for all vehicles to pass you before crossing an intersection on foot.
