Joseph Edward Lilley, Jr., a native of North Carolina, was killed in a single-car accident on U.S. 158 in Pasquotank County. He went off the road and crashed into a canal. This is the second fatal car accident in North Carolina in the past week, according to The Virginian Pilot.

My deepest condolences go out to Mr. Lilley’s family and friends. Losing a loved one is never easy. As an injury lawyer who regularly people seriously hurt in car accidents, I’ve seen the emotional toll it can take on relatives and close friends.

People may be surprised to find out that single-vehicle accidents account for nearly 60 percent of all automobile accidents. There can be a variety of contributing factors including over-correction, bad road conditions, distracted driving, drunk driving, etc. In fact, the other fatal car accident in North Carolina involved a 17-year-old girl who overcorrected and smashed into a tree on Bunker Hill Road in Camden County.

Whenever accidents like this occur, it’s important to emphasize the fundamentals of safe driving. Everyone needs to remember that there is an inherent level of risk when driving a vehicle and we all need to be at our best, especially in terms of attentiveness and responsiveness, while behind the wheel of a vehicle.
