Pasquotank Correctional Institution recently had an inmate seriously injure another inmate by stabbing him with a handmade knife. Last Tuesday the victim was stabbed 10 times with a homemade metal knife, authorities said.

Charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill were given to the accused perpetrator, said Pasquotank County Sheriff Randy Cartwright. This same inmate was already in prison for second-degree murder.

The victim is recovering at Albemarle Hospital until he is well enough to go back to the prison. He was currently serving his prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Although attacks with weapons are rare at the prison they must always be anticipated when dealing with violent criminals. According to Sheriff Cartwright the knife was created from metal taken from a piece of a locker in the jail. The two inmates lived in cell blocks on opposite sides of the prison. A witness at the correctional institute said the two had exchanged heated words earlier in the day.
