Two brothers and a friend died and two others were hurt in a car accident in Raleigh, North Carolina on Jan. 22.

The brothers were 19 and 17, and their friend was an 18 year old man. The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the Raleigh crash at the intersection of Forestville Road and Buffaloe Road at 2 am.

Police said the driver crossed the center line and slammed into an SUV. Two people in the SUV were sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. State troopers are investigating if the driver was under the influence of alcohol, but they have confirmed that speeding was a factor in the wreck.

Our View

Our North Carolina personal injury attorneys regret the loss of life in this Raleigh car accident. It is a shame that speeding apparently was a contributing factor in this car accident. Speeding killed 9557 people in 2015, according to the NHTSA. People speed for a variety of reasons: Many of us are juggling a busy schedule and are running behind….if we go just a little faster, we can get there on time. Or, young drivers tend to think they are immortal and cannot be injured, and exceed the speed limit.

Everyone should remember that speed limits exist to protect all of us from serious injury and death on American roads. If you speed regularly, you should reconsider your driving habits. Here is why:

  • There is a much higher chance for loss of vehicle control
  • The safety equipment in the car is less effective in a high speed crash
  • Stopping distances increase at higher speeds
  • Higher level of crash severity that can lead to worse and sometimes fatal injuries

Many drivers regularly drive aggressively and have little regard for the safety of others. If that driver gets into an accident that injures another driver or passenger, there can be very serious consequences. The negligent driver can be held liable in a personal injury lawsuit or wrongful death lawsuit, in addition to any criminal penalties he or she faces. For example, our Virginia personal injury attorneys represented a driver in Virginia Beach who was hit by another driver who did not yield right of way. Our client had to have several surgeries for injuries to his leg and lower body. He had to be in a wheelchair for months, and later could only walk with a walker. We settled that case for $1 million, and the negligent driver was liable for any amount of that sum that auto insurance did not cover.
