The waters off the Outer Banks of North Carolina are historically known as the “Graveyard of The Atlantic” due to the ships lost at sea over the years in its treacherous waters. However, on Saturday it appears that the Graveyard may have taken yet another victim.
The Coast Guard was dispatched Saturday on an alert that a windsurfer was swept out to sea off the coast of Corolla, NC. The town is a small resort community on the coast of Eastern Carolina along the Outer Banks.
The call came in Saturday night, about 8:40 p.m., from Corolla in Currituck County. A call originating from Pine Island called 9-1-1 and alerted the authorities that a windsurfer was in distress about 200 yards offshore.
According to eye witnesses the windsurfer was wearing a black wetsuit and was riding white surfboard with a blue sail.
An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue sent from Air Station Elizabeth City, along with a 47 foot rescue boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet and members of Ocean Rescue are on scene conducting a search for the missing man.
So far in their tireless search the rescue helicopter crew has only located a blue sail with no surfboard attached.
