An Amtrak train collided with a commercial tractor-trailer in Halifax County, North Carolina (NC)recently. Over 40 people suffered injuries in this horrific collision. The impact was so severe that it caused a portion of the Amtrak train to derail.

This terrible railroad accident highlights just how devastating a train wreck can be at a railroad crossing. In some cases, the train doesn’t have sufficient time to slow down and winds up smashing into a vehicle at a high rate of speed. In 2013, there were over 2,000 train accidents resulting in over 250 deaths and nearly 300 serious injuries, according to Operation Lifesaver. As you can see, when these accidents happen, the damage is extensive.

We do not know the extent of the injuries to the passengers and railroad workers involved in this awful collision. However, we would not be surprised if the injuries are debilitating. Our train accident injury law firm is familiar with these types of serious railroad crossing accidents. For example, we represented a railroad conductor who suffered career-ending back injuries after their train collided with a truck at a railroad crossing. Our client was riding on the side of a railroad car rolling through the Pinners Point Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia (VA) when a truck pulled onto the track in front of the train. The collision knocked our client off of the side of the car and they suffered serious back injuries. We were able to settle our client’s case for $650,000. We sincerely wish a speedy recovery for all passengers and employees injured in the Halifax County Amtrak train accident.
