Asbestos found in a Craven County community  college building has forced it to close down recently.  The highly  toxic substance was found to be in the building’s old floor tile. Environmental  tests show that the Bender Building in the Craven Community College  campus must be cleared and the asbestos removed.

According to Craven President Catherine  Chew, "Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students  and employees."  The Bender Building has been used for the college’s  continuing education program and Craven says tests suggest that exposure  to people who were in the building was minimal.

Following the test indicating positive  signs of asbestos, college employees have been moved out of the building  and the college has hired an environmental engineer and a state-licenses  contractor to clean up the highly toxic and carcinogenic substance.

Ten thousand Americans die each year  — a rate approaching 30 deaths per day — from diseases caused by asbestos,  according to a detailed analysis of government mortality records and  epidemiological studies by the EWG Action Fund. Asbestos kills thousands  more people than skin cancer each year, and nearly the number that are  slain in assaults with firearms. The suite of diseases linked to asbestos  exposure overwhelmingly affect older men.
