A man from Maryland was killed in a motorcycle accident in Nelson County, Virginia (VA) on Route 29.

Virginia State Police stated that a car was driving on 29 South and was turning left onto Route 56 West when the motorcycle slammed into him. The man driving the motorcycle was killed at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured, but it appeared that she was at fault in the accident. She has been charged with reckless driving.

This sad incident shows how dangerous riding a motorcycle can be. In 2008, vehicle crashes in the US were at an all time low, but motorcycle deaths were at an all time high. In fact, they doubled between 1999 and 2008. If you are going to ride a motorcycle, it is very important to follow basic safety rules:

  • Always wear a DOT-approved helmet
  • Never ride after drinking, not even a sip
  • Wear protective clothes, such as denim or leather, and you should have a bright colored or reflective top so other drivers can see you
  • Never tailgate
  • Never drive over the speak limit and slow down when driving on a wet road
