Reginald Maurice Butler, the Virginia Beach (VA) man killed in a police chase early Saturday, passed through a Virginia Beach Police Department De speed trap doing more than 100 miles an hour, police told The Virginian-Pilot.

Butler, 34, died when he crashed his 2005 Ford Focus into a home at 1701 Chilhowie Circle. My colleague Emily Mapp Brannon wrote about this tragic case earlier this week.

Police had said an officer tried to pull Butler over for speeding, but they had not said how fast he was going. The speed trap was set up on Ferrell Parkway when Butler passed through at about 1:40 a.m., the newspaper said.

The officer running the stationary radar at the speed trap tried to pull Butler over, but he turned onto Lynnhaven Parkway and refused to stop.

Butler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his car and died at the scene.

The Pilot also reported that police said that alcohol was a factor, but the newspaper’s story did not elaborate.

This is a tragic story for Mr. Butler’s family, for the witnesses who saw the crash’s graphic aftermath, and for the police officers and emergency responders left to pick up the pieces. It also serves as a reminder for these safe driving tips:

– Don’t speed, and if a police officer attempts to pull over for speeding – or any other infraction – comply with his instructions quickly and safely.

– Especially when driving at night, beware of drunk or reckless drivers.
