Repaired Roads Are Safe Roads

Potholes and roads in disrepair are not just a pain in the wallet. They can also be quite dangerous.

All roads are subject to damage, and it is difficult to keep them from being destroyed by harsh weather and heavy use. Being a safe driver is a must if you want to avoid coming into contact with the damaged pavement. Here are some ways to help prevent the unfortunate problems and dangers that can occur from roads in disrepair:

Do not tailgate; leave enough room between you and the vehicle in front of you. This will allow you to see the pothole before hitting it.
Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. This way, if you need to swerve to divert away from the damaged area you can do so safely.
Keep within the speed limits.
Check your tire pressure frequently.
Do not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It is costly to keep up with the maintenance and repairs of the roads, but motorists have to face the costs of repairs when damages occur to their cars. Potholes can cause damage to the suspension and steering components, shocks and struts, tires can blowout and rims can get dent; potholes can even throw the car off course causing an accident.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced several projects for I-264 in Virginia Beach set to begin as early as August 2012. The first phase involves the eastbound lanes of the interstate between the Witchduck Road and Lynnhaven Parkway exits. The second will bring new pavement to the east- and westbound lanes between the Lynnhaven Parkway and Parks Avenue exits. This is great news for the residents of Virginia Beach, as they have been dealing with these problems for a considerable amount of time.

Repairs will include fixing damaged pavement, replacing barriers, upgrading curbs and improving drainage. Once construction begins, the public should keep informed and on top the updates; traffic delays are to be expected and extra time should be allotted.

There are more projects in the near future for I-264 in Virginia Beach. Work is currently being done on I-264 between Broad Creek Bridge and Claiborne Avenue in Norfolk, and is said to be scheduled for completion in November 2012.
